Back when we lived in Toledo, I made beer bread all the time. I'd make it from a mix that I bought from Tastefully Simple. We loved it, but the mix was kind of expensive for what it was, and when we moved to Chicago, we lost all of our Tastefully Simple connections, so I just put beer bread to the back of my mind.
And, then, I found a recipe for it (from scratch) on Chow.com. I made some modifications (of course), but hey! It's the same stuff I used to make back in T-Town and I don't need any mix. Score!
Beer Bread
3 cups all purpose flour
3 tablespoons sugar (I used Turbinado - sugar in the raw)
1 tablespoon baking powder
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1 bottle beer (I used Guinness tonight, but you can use anything you like)
1 stick butter melted (this is actually optional, but yum)
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Combine the first five ingredients. Add half of the butter and combine again. Pour half of the remaining butter in the bottom of a loaf pan. Add the batter and top it with the rest of the butter. Bake for one hour.
This looks so good! No yeast? I'm making it tomorrow.

Yes, I think I will do this. I have some apple butter that needs a home.

This is one I'll have to try especially with the weather cooling down finally. Thank you for sharing!

My family makes this all the time. I love the crusty, buttery edges. Also great with a sprinkle of sharp cheddar cheese and some fresh herbs mixed in.

Ok, so... I made the recipe, and the bread baked for about half an hour.
Then the fire alarm went off. Again. Again. And again. Some mysterious element of the bread batter (I'm guessing that extra yummy butter) is sadly spattered all over my oven.
Then the Brinks people called to see if we were ok, just like in their commercials. They'd already called the fire department, but they would call back to cancel.
Only it turns out that you can't cancel them once they are en route. So the fire department came. And left again.
And I now have no bread. :(

A note: don't use cheap beer. I started making this with "good" stuff--micro-brews--and once when we didn't have anything in the house except Bud Light, I thought it would be okay. (I do not drink beer--good or otherwise--so I really didn't realize it would make such a big difference.) It was horrible and no one would eat it. Including the DH who actually drinks Bud Light.

guess i'm a little behind everyone else, but i recently bought the (very expensive) tastefully simple product and thought, "pretty good, but there's got to be a cheaper way." so i will be giving this a shot. i also thought the product was too sweet, so i made it with plain seltzer water! my kids loved it.

I used to buy tastefully simple mix but never again! This is the only beer bread recipe I could find online that didn't call for self rising flour but still tastes great. Good idea on the seltzer water.
